Visitors passing Spieden Island on a Washington State ferry on their way to Sidney, British Columbia, Canada from Anacortes or travelling by private boat are often stunned to see Mouflon sheep from Corsica, Fallow deer from Europe, and Sika deer from Asia grazing on its grassy slopes.\u00a0Due to the rain shadow created by the Olympic Mountains, the island is dry on its southern side and wooded on its northern slopes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Spieden_Island-1024.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-636 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Spieden_Island-1024-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Spieden_Island-1024-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Spieden_Island-1024-600x451.png 600w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Spieden_Island-1024.png 978w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Spieden Island\u2019s climate sets it apart from the rest of the San Juan Islands. In the aerial photo below, The Nature Conservancy&#8217;s Sentinel Island (south)\u00a0and the Cactus Islands\u00a0(north)\u00a0are privately owned. It\u2019s possible. The former science teacher, who designed field studies for Seattle\u2019s Pacific Science Center, leased the island for several years. Students participated in activities like hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling. They studied subjects like tide pools, tides and currents, navigation, astronomy, geology, and Native American history. And they slept in the safari-style tents on wooden platforms left\u00a0by the hunters.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Spieden Island, is owned by James Jannard, the founder of Oakley sunglasses and RED Digital Cinema.\u00a0He purchased the island in 1997 for $22 million dollars. And it is private!
