Weather proved to be windy and wet, so we donned our foul weather gear. And when we arrived, we anchored in the middle of protected Reid Harbor on Stuart Island. A Christmas tree bedecked the racing sloop\u2019s stern in holiday splendor and its owners invited us aboard when we returned from our ambling ashore. What we didn\u2019t anticipate is that this afternoon visit of exchanging sea tales would end at ten o-clock in total darkness.<\/p>\n<p>If we had thought to turn on our anchor light, brought a compass and had taken bearings, or packed flashlights, we might know where our boat swung at anchor in the large bay. Later, we learned that flashlight and lanterns aren\u2019t effective unless you are a couple boat lengths away. Spotlights, like the landing lights of a small plane, are needed. Who knew? What should have taken us half an hour, took us an hour, but we did find our boat!<\/p>\n<p>This gem, Stuart Island, is flanked on two sides by the U.S.\/Canada border that splits Haro Strait and Boundary Pass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stuart_Island.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-371 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stuart_Island-271x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stuart_Island-271x300.png 271w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stuart_Island-600x664.png 600w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stuart_Island.png 629w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both channels are vessel traffic lanes for ships arriving from the Pacific Ocean, through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, to Vancouver, Canada. After visitors select locally designed t-shirts, greeting cards, and postcards from two wooden sea chests staged beside the county dirt road, they mail in their payments using the IOU slip and envelope provided. It&#8217;s fun to take a peek at their treasure each visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20140712_Sea_Chest-185.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-282 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20140712_Sea_Chest-185-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20140712_Sea_Chest-185-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20140712_Sea_Chest-185.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20140712_Sea_Chest-185-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike the ferry accessible islands, finding enough students to keep Stuart Island\u2019s one-room schoolhouse open has been a challenge in recent years. The old teacherage (Stuart Island museum) and old schoolhouse (library) were built in the early 1900s. The newer building was erected in 1980, first as a gym, theater, and community meeting hall before becoming the main school. Since the island does not have electricity, the school runs on a diesel generator and invertor. It is heated by an oil-fired furnace and woodstove.
