Heavy clouds spill 12 to 14 feet of rain each year in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/olym\/planyourvisit\/visiting-the-hoh.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hoh Rain Forest<\/a>\u00a0as they drift\u00a0northeast before wringing another 18 to 20 inches over the San Juan Islands.\u00a0Combining\u00a0this weather pattern with\u00a0the unique topography of the archipelago and a perfect climate exists for the Brittle Prickly Pear cactus to inhabit <a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/?p=152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Juan Island<\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/?p=612\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yellow Island<\/a>, and the Cactus Islands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1489\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1489\" src=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024-600x376.jpg 600w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cactus_Islands-sailboat-stbd_2816-1024.jpg 1005w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->One of three cacti in the state, the Brittle Prickly Pear is the only cactus native to Western Washington. Besides the San Juan Islands and Canadian Gulf Islands, it\u00a0is found on\u00a0Whidbey Island, north and east of Sequim, and near Port Townsend\u2014all locations within the Olympic rain shadow. The round, dark green pads break easily at the joints and have barbed spines, their color varying from ivory-to-red according to the time of year. In June, the yellow flowers bloom and are reminiscent of\u00a0wild roses. In the photo\u00a0below, <a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/?p=630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spieden Island<\/a>\u00a0is flanked by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nature Conservancy<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0Sentinel Island (south) and\u00a0the Cactus Islands (north) which are privately owned.
