You betcha! Snowflakes, like feathers from heaven, fell from the sky and blanketed our sailboat anchored on the west side of Canoe Island.\u00a0Imagine\u00a0evergreen trees flocked in white and the island\u2019s rocky shoreline fringed with frost. Seabirds call to one another in the quiet bay shared with Shaw Island, where one can row ashore to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sanjuanco.com\/523\/Shaw-Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shaw Island County Park<\/a>\u00a0and amble\u00a0the beach. Our first\u00a0visit to the San Juan Islands in the snow remains a fond memory. It took us several years before we discovered that the owners of this private 49-acre island ran\u00a0a summer French camp for children.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/French_flags.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1356\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1356 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/French_flags-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"French_flags\" width=\"403\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/French_flags-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/debgarland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/French_flags.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons<\/h5>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Canoe Island French Camp<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Desiring to send their daughter to a French camp and finding none on the West Coast in 1969, Dr. Warren Austin and his wife, Florence Heath Horton Austin, founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canoeisland.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canoe Island French Camp<\/a> on Orcas\u00a0Island. Six years later, the camp moved to its permanent home on Canoe Island. They participate in fun, artistic and outdoor, traditional Northwest camp activities. A typical day involves attending language classes in the morning,\u00a0before\u00a0applying the new vocabulary and grammar skills to other activities like ceramics, fencing, kayaking, photography, and snorkeling. Meals are a\u00a0French culinary experience. Counselors place the children in French language classes by ability. Many of them leave their two-week or three-week camps with increased self-awareness, greater independence, and new friends. The\u00a0camp also holds sessions for families, offers cooking classes, and schedules work parties throughout the year. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canoeisland.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here<\/a> for more information about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canoeisland.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canoe Island French Camp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three other\u00a0favorite overnight camps for children exist in the San Juan Islands. <a href=\"http:\/\/norwester.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camp Nor&#8217;wester<\/a> (see my post on <a href=\"http:\/\/debgarland.com\/?p=686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johns Island<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.camporkila.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YMCA Camp Orkila<\/a> (Orcas Island)\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourwindscamp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camp Four Winds Westward Ho<\/a> (Orcas Island).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-17022\" class=\"text Prov-22-6\">&#8220;Train up a child in the way he should go, a<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-22-6\">nd when he is old he will not depart from it.&#8221; (Proverbs 22:6 &#8211; NKJV)<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I attended a Girl Scout camp with\u00a0my sister. We stayed\u00a0in\u00a0a Conestoga wagon (without wheels) with two other girls. We felt like we were real Oregon Trail pioneers! Did you go to a camp when you were a child?
